Advice on separating two roofs

2 Attachment(s)
Hi

I need some advice on a re-roofing project.

The problem is I have two roofs connected by shingles and I would like to separate them.

Not sure if this helps at all, but here's the history: The house was built with a porch on the front (the lower roof on the front) that was later enclosed and made into a kitchen. Then, a stand-alone garage was built next to the house. Finally, the house and garage were joined with a breeseway.

Both the garage roof and the hip roof in the front need to be replaced, but at this point in time, I can only replace the front hip roof.

As you can hopefully see from the pictures, the two roofs are joined and if I am going to replace just one, I need to separate them, but I have no good ideas on how to do this.

Picture 2 shows the join, which is about 5' wide.

I hope I've explained this clearly.

Can anyone help with this?

Thanks . . . Brian

The only way I can see to separate the two is take that part of the hip out from the hip rafter back to the other roof and then rafter it up straight across. That would eliminate the valley and hip on that end.

don't know if this helps or not, but if it was my roof I would take down the hip roof and replace it with one that had the same pitch as the garage and was level with the garage roof. would look a lot better and would eliminate the hip and valley. of course this is a lot more work as you'd have siding that needed to be filled in.

That is a god awful mess.

I would replace as many sections as financially possible. If your just wanting to replace the front hip section,,,pop the ridge and tear it off then replace the ridge.

What "jiju" and "Roofmaster" say!
Also, it looks like they attempted to do a "full-wove" valley -
they didn't, really do it correctly.
If you're going to redo the hip-roof - strip it completely and remove the shingles on the garage roof - 2 or 3 feet onto the garage roof - at the
valley.
Install Ice and Water Shield on the valley between the hip roof and the
garage.
Rework the shingles from the garage roof onto the hip-roof - a foot and a
half to 2 feet onto the hip-roof (minimum).
Then re-roof the hip-roof.
If you feel you're going to have problems with this - find someone in
your area that can help you with it.
Also, someone that knows how to do flashing - in your photo, I'm
seeing flashing details - that might be problematic!
Be careful dealing with your siding -
We call it "asbestos-slate" - it cracks very easily!
Good luck!

Also, someone who knows how to deal with the vent that's coming up through the hip!

Hi Everyone

Thanks a lot for the answers.

I appreciate that all of you took the time to do this.

I think I will wait until next spring, and do the garage roof at the same time.

I have another question about how to ventilate the hip roof, but I won't confuse the issue here and will post another thread.

Once again . . . . thanks everyone.
