What does a 1 on 2 pitch mean in terms of a roof?

Many of the terms get intermingled these days but most roofing contracts and discussions not refer to the angle of the roof in terms of the slope.

Slope of a roof would be something like a 6:12 where that would refer to 6" of rise for 12" of run.

Pitch is rise over 2X (times) run. So a 6:12 slope would be a 6/24 pitch or 1 on 4.

If they were referring to pitch and they said 1 on 2 or 1 over 2, it is very likely they could be referring to a 12:12 slope roof. This would be a pretty steep roof and have a 45° angle and would be quite un-walkable under normal conditions (i.e. not a mountain goat).

I thought 1 on 2 or 1over 2 was a 6:12 pitch 6 over 12 equals 1 over 2?

That would be referencing the slope.

The Pitch they double up the run for comparison.

I think it is an more old school measurement terminology.
