Where to put the tile niche in the shower?

My layout doesn't work to have a full tile niche. I am not sure if I should have a grout line in it or whether I should scrap the whole idea and install corner shelves. I plan on using ditra in the niche and wonder if the buildup of ditra/thin set should be incorporated into the framing for a niche. I've posted a pic of the tile layout vs the framing. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

It sure would have been easier to do before you put up the backer board.

Often a niche looks good with the tile set on a diagonal--then matching up grout lines is eliminated.

You wouldn't use DITRA in a niche.
You might use KERDI tho.

There are other ways to have a niche you know?

Yeah I missed the boat when I had the tub out to reframe but my beautiful wife decided she wanted a niche after the fact. I should have known. And sorry, I meant kerdi, not ditra. When you say there is other ways, what did you mean?

Here is your "best-bet" now that you have gotten ahead of the game. These products will allow to remove only what is necessary to fit the niche into place. They are made to fit between two standard wall studs 16" on center.

If you need further installation suggestions speak up.

Where to put the tile niche in the shower?

For those diy'ers who look at this thread, I installed 2x4s perpendicular to the studs to frame my niche. Then put up hardi board up including the niche and taped all the seams. I tiled the insides with the same tile as the outside but cut the tiles for the inside to match the grout lines on the outside. In order to extend the bottom shelf of the niches out further I attached marble bullnose to the bottom outside of the niche. A more tedious and cumbersome job, but much cheaper than purchasing a niche.

Nice work Dimebag!

For your niche, and the small shelf you made inside the niche.. Is that just two bullnose style tiles stacked on top of each other supported on 3 sides (2 sides and the back)? I've seen niches done with just a plain "box" (by framing it w/ 2x4's), but that smaller shelf w/in the niche is very nice for things like soap/razor/etc. Nice job!

I actually bought a one-foot long piece of bullnose marble carrera. It's flat on top. I attached the bullnose to the outside bottom of the niche with the flat part facing up so that it acted as an extension of the niche's bottom shelf. I attempted to attach a picture. Don't know if it worked.Where to put the tile niche in the shower?-shower-july-2011.jpg

Thanks amgdiy.. I'm familiar w/ how to make a niche (I generally just use bullnose tile), but I was wondering specifically how you make a niche w/ two "compartments" to it, like the other picture above. He made one niche, but it has a small lower compartment (for say soap/razors/etc), and a larger top compartment for shampoo/etc. Is it just two bullnose tiles back to back supported on 3 sides?
