what type of morter should I use for slate 24x10 tile for my entrance way.

I have some white mortar left over from when I did some marble tile in my shower. Should I use this for my entrance way (slate tiles)???

If not what should I use? I'm placing them on top of cement board.

Thanks,
Limit54

No answer, just a couple of questions I suspect may be relevant.

What specifically, is the "mortar" you used? Read the bag.

How old is it?

I' have to read the bag later but from what I remember it says white mortar for stone tie(marble/slate/granite).

I just used it again 2 weeks ago and it was fine. The stuff is about 3 months old.

Does mortar go bad? I was actually going to ask that...hows long is it good for?

it does but moisture is the main enemy. the biggest technical difference i noticed with looking at thinset is the adhesive bond strength. the cheap junk isn't anywhere near as good as even a moderately priced name brand like versabond. it's only like 13 a bag. slate also doesn't bleed color like marble so the white there isn't a worry, just with your grout. it MIGHT be like faintly lighter than if you used grey but i'm not sure if you would ever notice or if it would be faintly lighter. ive never conducted a double blind to see if the difference is noticeable on any of my projects.

the other question is if you have enough and if not is it worth bothering. then again for 13 a bag you could run to depot and grab grey versa and not even worry.

well I know that I have enough. The stuff that I have cost me $40 and the adhesion is very good. The stuff is like glue. I used it on my shower wall with 12x12 marble tiles(they aren't going anywhere).

I'm sure the stuff will be fine. I was just curious to know if it was a no no.

also, I used grey thinset in my kitchen under very white marble tiles and I got no bleed through at all. I used the same tile in my bathroom with the white thinset and I really don't see a difference...they might be a little darker in my kitchen then my bathroom but honestly I can't even tell...the only reason I think so is because I found out about the bleed through after the fact. Sometimes you get bleed through and sometimes you don't..I guess it depends on the grade of the tile.

Thanks,
