I am remodeling one of my bathrooms. I removed all tiles and underlayment. Then I installed cement Durock boards on old plywood using grey VersaBond thin set. I have a lot of thin set left.
Now I am planning to put tiles on top of my new underlayment. I have light color porcelain tiles (very light grey color, close to white) and much darker grey grout.
Is it ok to use the same grey thin set? Is it going to work with almost white tiles and grey grout?
If not, then if I buy white VersaBond thin set is it going to work with grey grout.
What are my options?
Buy white thin set and lighter colored grout?
works fine with porcelain. it's only transparent stone {like white marble} that's a worry and even with that i doubt you would ever see it unless the lighting was perfect.
I think you'll regret the darker grey grout. Against almost white tiles, I think it will just look like dirty grout. I'd return it and get a grout that's the same color or only slightly darker than the tile - a light grey would be better than a dark gray.
Thanks a lot for your suggestion. I don't like white grout on the floor because very soon it becomes dirty and grey anyway. And I would like grout color differ from tile color. I'll think about returning dark grey grout and using lighter grout color.
gotta go with what you like for colors. without pictures of the room and tile we really can't even make a rational suggestion with the grout. do give some thought to it and possibly ask 1-2 people you know what they think.
I got white Versabond mortar and put few tiles yesterday. The mortar color almost matches my tiles color. So, it is not visible and looks good even without grout. I also went to Home Depot and got ‘Antique White’ color grout. It almost matches my tile color as well. I think I am ok now. Thanks a lot for all your help. Igor
My contractor has already put up our mosaic (not glass) tiles for the kitchen back splash using white thinset. Without asking us he decided we should have white grout which will blend the light colored tiles together. I want dark grout to make them pop. Now he says it's too late to choose the dark gray grout I want because the white thinset will make it look blotchy. Is this true? I am quite upset about this.
MaggieNews, welcome to the forums. Rather than hijacking a 7 year old thread, you should have started your own. No harm. A mod may put it where it belongs. The thinset and grout have absolutely nothing to do with each other. The thinset will never (or shouldn't) be seen after the tile installation has cured. The grout will cover all the lines and unless he was sloppy and left thinset proud of the line, it will not be an issue.
You should have specified the grout color. That can't be undone without scraping it all out, which may damage tile in the process.
Thanks for answering, chandler48. Especially so quickly.
I assumed he was going to ask me what color grout I wanted before making the decision on his own that it would be white. He was sloppy with the thinset, especially after he told my husband we couldn't have dark grout. But I still want the dark grout even if it does look splotchy in some places. This guy is a personal friend of ours who will get emotional when we tell him we don't want what he wants. So we are going to ask him to finish the kitchen (it's an extensive re-build and he has done everything himself) but leave the tiles without grout. Then when he is gone we'll see what we can do with it.
