tumbled stone, what is needed to install

Small bathroom floor, 4 x8, I have removed all old tiles down to the old cement/concrete mud bed. The wife brought this tumbled stone home for me to install. I was expecting standard tile. Can you please tell me what else is needed or the difference in laying this and tile.

1. What do I use to lay this? Mastic, mortor, ect…
2. If I was going to lay 12” tile I would have ¼” trowel size, what do I use for this? It is on a mosaic mess backing.
3. I was going to lay it right on the old mortar bed, should I lay a ¼ hardiboard down. My fear sealing the hardi down, in the shower I had to pre-drill each screw. The floor is over a 12” thick.

Any help would be great.

Modified thinset mortar.

A 1/4" trowel will be too big for that product. Use a 1/8" X 1/8" X 1/8" square notch.

Never install cement board over a concrete floor.

Have no idea what that means and not even going to go there.

Have no idea what that means and not even going to go there......I had the same style of mud bed on the wall, some areas were cracked and chunks of mortar were falling off, the local tile store said to put up the hardiboard and us PL500 Adhesive and glue and screw hardi as it would be on floor. I used standard thinset with a 1/8 trowel and screwed it up every 12" into the old. ANYWAY...the shower wont ever be used.

DO i need to do anything after I lay and grout? Assuming I grout the holes in the tile?
Sealer recommendations?
white thinset, and what is modified thinset?

"Modified thinset" is the counterpart to unmodified thinset. There are only two.
