tore out tile, left with thinset mess

I got about 1/3 through a shower wall tile job and realized I couldn't live with multiple mistakes I made (layout, uneven lines) and removed the tiles. I'm now left with dried, bumpy thinset on the cement board that definitely needs to be fixed, smoothed before I put up new tiles. Any suggestions on how to get the thinset off the cement board without replacing the cement board?

Thanks.

Go buy a corborundum rub stone and go after the thinset. Wear a mask.
