Tiling Step Risers

The wood on my step risers is a little beat up, so instead of painting, I was thinking of putting 1/4 veneer to match the refinished threads or maybe tiling the risers using a ceramic tile. I've seen tile on risers before and think it looks good.

If I tiled the risers, can I use standard tile glue? What about grouting, what would I use? In general is this a good idea, or can I expect trouble down the road because of movement/vibrations on steps?

Tiling Step Risers

Both are not good ideas. No way to make the treads look good with a 1/4" veneer. How would you treat the bullnose edge? And tile to the rises would soon fail. (maybe a week or two)
