Tiling outdoor concrete patio with copper pennies
I love the look of "penny floor" and would like to do it on our 100 sq ft concrete patio. I am planning to create 1 sq ft fibermesh tiles with pennies as it will be much faster to lay them than individual pennies. The question is: what kind of adhesive should I use? different sites recommend glue for indoor installation. Is it possible for outdoor flooring? If I use regular mortar, will it go through fiberglass? What type of grout will be best? How should I seal the floor? I'm new to tiling, even basic advice is welcome. Thank you!

You will need to experiment----I think that you should be able to use fiberglass drywall repair mesh---you will need to call a drywall supply house like Ammes to see what sizes are available.
I think ,if you lay the mesh over wax paper, you could brush on epoxy and set the coins into that--- You will want to set the completed sheets to your concrete patio with epoxy thinset---and grout with epoxy grout---- This won't be cheap--but should work well---no sealing will be needed if you use epoxy grout--- The sheets could actually be set into a bed of epoxy grout and completed in one step---experiment---so try a sample first---

Make sure you use real copper pennies (1981 or older) and not the plated zinc pennies (1983 and up). 1982 pennies are a toss up. Concrete will probably eat the zinc ones.

Cool idea.
How would you seal or protect it? I would be concerned on how well they would weather outside. In your shoes I might do one square and leave it outside for several months before I commit to 100 sq feet. |
