Tiles Over Painted Drywall

Heya guys,

I just finished remodelling (painting, floor tiling, etc) my Half Bath and realized that it would be nice idea to have wall tiles around the pedestal sink.

What is the best way to lay down the tiles over painted drywall?

Scuff sand the area----use a modified powdered thinset---often screwing a wood ledger board to support the second row of tiles is needed--then remove the ledger when the thinset is set--and add the bottom row.

That link is so vague that it is useless----used the word adhesive and mortar interchangeably----they are entirely different products ---

How big are your tiles? Wall hung sink or vanity with a top?

A few more details and you will get a more helpful answer.

A pic of the area, and knowing what kind of tiles you are considering would help.

I love the idea about wood ledger board to support the second row.

This is continuation of my Half Bath Remodelling project started in SLC: Mixed Feelings topic.

I gonna use 3"x6" Fawn Bright (U785) glossy tiles.

Its matching to Adobe Straw, which is next lighter color after Blanket Brown (color of the wall) on that sampler.

It's going to be around this Pedestal Sink:

Initially I was planning to leave just painted walls. But then decided to cover the walls from splatters with tiles.

Tiles will go on the wall Behind the Sink, 2 ft on the Left and 2 ft on the Right. Left and Right sides will end by Bullnose tiles.

I was planning to trim the Top with Counter Rail, but could not find matching color.

Tile's top level suppose to go just about 1 inch above the outlet opening on the right:

That will look nice----As to the height---lay a strip of painters tape where you think the top should be---look at it for a few days and get a feel for the height.

Guy from tile section in my local Home Depot said that thinset is no-no for wall tiles. He recommended adhesive OmniGrip by Custom Building Products.

Is that OmniGrip adhesive any good?
What would you, guys, recommend?

I really wanna hear your opinion.

Sounds like he has no tile experience what so ever---

Let's hope so,any way.

I don't know much about adhesives any more--a few years back all the formulas were changed to meet new government regulations--and the new formulas now re-emulsify when they get wet or even damp---so I stopped using them at all.

They also take a long time to dry--sandwiched between tile and painted drywall--so grouting the day after setting is not always possible---

In your case an adhesive will work fine---I would use powdered modified thinset---

I still dont know what to choose.
I would prefer something like VersaBond:

But same guy said it would not stick that well to paint. Especially it says "Bonds well to plywood and conrete floors". And he said it would be heavy...

I used Mapei Type 1 for a very similar application a few years back and it's held up just fine.

It was used both over 1/2" permaboard, and over 1/2" drywall (painted) as well.

The product works....

I asked the guy who does it for living many years and he said that he uses AcrylPro on EVERYTHING or ALMOST everything. He said that I should just simply rough the surface little bit and I will be fine.

PS. BTW do you know what ever happened to my images? Did I break any rules or something?

Pictures vanished---I wondered what happened to them---No rule breaking happened---

It's a mystery---Try putting them up again-----

Modified thinset is fine---lightly sand the area---but you will be fine even if you don't--that;s clean paint and looks like a low sheen---
