Tile in a tight space

I am remodeling my bathroom and completely gutted it. I am doing a full tile shower and plan on putting some shelves (think they may be called "niches") on the back wall to hold certain things. I made two large squares and then a 2x4 below that two thinner spaces but the same length as the above ones. Now I am wondering how I am supposed to put a piece of backerboard in the smaller shelves. I can't possibly get a drill in at least the top and bottom sides so I'm wondering if there is some type of glue I can use to either stick the backerboard with or maybe just put the tile directly on the wood with or is there another way to do this? Maybe use the thinset as a type of adhesive and put some on the backerboard and apply it to the wood?

Not the best one, took it with my phone but the general idea gets across. It's about 4 3/4" tall and 14 1/2" long.

or, a right-angle adapter on your drill. you'll still need to put a waterproofing membrane over the CBU.

I dont see why you couldn't get an extension on your drill and go in at a steep angle. You have to countersink those screws a bit any way so a little out of plump wont hurt too bad.
