Tile over a painted wood cabinet that abuts a garden tub

My garden tub abuts a painted wood cabinet. It is tiled on all the other sides, but I'd like to tile the side of the cabinet so water can't damage the side. If I put a cement backer over it first, it will be too thick and look bad from the front edge.

Liquid waterproofing.

Redgard from Home Depot maybe.

What would you use to stick the porcelain tiles to the surface with after the waterproofing is applied?
