I cut a 6 ft. arch between livingroom and dining room to open the area up. Friend attached luan to the inside of the arch, knowing I wanted to tile the inside of the arch. Now realize I shouldn't have used the luan. Is it possible now to attach with galvanized screws some wire lathe, put a thin coat of mastick then attached the tile to the wire & mastick? If doable, how long might it last?

That sounds like a bad idea. Why not tear off the luan and use proper backer board. I've never tiled an arch but I imagine you would want something like 1/4" Hardibacker that will likely conform to your arch, Hopefully one of the tile experts will weigh in.
Everywhere you go, everywhere you look, everything you read, specifically excludes the use of luan in any tile project. Anyone using luan should be slapped around in a dark alley late at night. To cover it with mastic and keep going means the firing squad.
