Tile over linoleum

I had an estimate for a tile installation and he said he was going to put it over the existing linoleum. Should that be done and should it cost me less if I allow him to do it that way?

Tile over sheet vinyl is about as bad as it comes---It can be done(over certain kinds) but the failure rate is very high.

Have it removed and a new layer of cement backer board installed.

If the installer did not suggest this he may not be the guy for the job.

As Mike said it can be done, but...... I've done it on several occasions and never a problem, that I know of. It's not a good way to do things though, especially today with soft sheet vinyl floors, and also because so many are perimeter glued only.

You forgot to say what is under the vinyl, makes a difference.

It'll should cost less this way, of course. Maybe not less in the end if it has to be redone, but less now.

Remove the vinyl and the 1/4" underlayment below it if it is there. The underlayment can be the real devil. It can have voids under it and flex enough to wreck a tile installation.
