We recently built an addition on the second floor. We are putting in a full bathroom and I wanted to put in tile flooring. My father (who is doing the work for us - thanks Dad!) says that our house is too old (about 100 years) and shifts too much and the tile will crack.
Have other people encounted this problem with older homes?
The problem identified by your father has nothing to do with the age of the house, and everything to do with the stiffness of the joists and subfloor. There are plenty of old houses perfectly capable of supporting tile, and there are plenty of new houses not stiff enough to support tile. Search the posts on this website, or the John Bridge website, or the Schluter website, for a full discussion about necessary floor stiffness for tile, and how to determine if your house is stiff enough to support tile, and what to do if it is not.
