which side of 1/2" Hardibacker faces out?

i was wondering which side of 1/2" Hardibacker faces out to the tile. i am inclined to think the rough side faces out to the tile and the smooth side goes in to the studs but i've read different recommendations online. so i wouldn't mind some confirmation.

thanks

I put my installs with label facing out.

if you are referring to the paper label that has bar codes on it, that's the rough side (at least the ones i have purchased and waiting for install). but the smooth side also has some HARDIEBACKER black lettering written directly on the board.

I would think you'd want the side that has "Hardiebacker-500-1/2" Ceramic Tile Backerboard" and has the fastening pattern all over it to be the surface to tile to. :whistling2:

However Hardie says; Either is acceptable, but we recommend that the smooth side with the nailing pattern of every 8" on center go up.

only 1/4" board has fastening pattern. 1/2" is flat on both sides
