Shower tile specifics re: hair coloring

Much has been written regarding ceramic tile and the subset porcelain tile, but much of that info has to do with durability with floor traffic. My question is about a very specific issue pertaining to tiles in the shower that hasn't been covered.

After a demo and all the appropriate prep, i.e. cement board, sloping shower pan, etc. etc., I want to install tile in our shower. I want to install unglazed porcelain that looks like natural stone, but I have an issue that may prohibit this. As many middle-aged woman in the world today, I color my hair in the shower. The dark auburn color would certainly stain some types of tile. My understanding is that porcelain is vitreous and would not stain. I don't want the glazed tiles if possible because I like the look of the natural stone... I don't want a glossy appearance. Are there any porcelain tiles that are unglazed that will withstand hair color? Thx!

Just pick up samples of tiles you like and see if they stain. I have unglazed porcelain tiles in the kitchen an they haven't stained with red wine or anything else. I used an Italian company called Cerdonomous.
But best thing to do is just try out different tiles with the dye.
I think you'll have more of an issue with the grout then the tile.
Set up two tiles with a grout in place between them. Seal the grout with a few coats of sealer, then do the experiments.
The grout will need to be sealed on a regular schedule.

Most people think that "glazed" means shiny, it does not. Glazed tiles can be very dull and rough. I agree the grout would be more of an issue, although with the water running I doubt even the grout will stain. Use a beige/brown grout just in case, you'll want a color anyway.

Standing in the shower applying the coloring will get it on the walls, above the water spray area. It then runs down the walls and settles it the grout joints.

Any porcelain tile will work as good as anything will. Porcelain is the best bet, glazed or unglazed doesn't matter. Use a urethane grout.

Even porcelain tiles can be stained slightly so seal the tiles.
