Shower floor tiles cracking

I have had to replace several floor tiles in my shower due to cracking. After removing the existing ones, I noticed the tile sub-contractor used sand on top of the pan - apparently to raise it up to the floor drain. I now have had several more tiles to crack and realize I have to just go ahead and replace them all. What do I do about the sand as it is totally saturated now? Do I have to start all over? Getting the tile up to the proper level to drain is the problem?

How are the tiles coming up?

What type of sand is this? Fine, coarse?

What is under the sand?

What size is the shower pan? What do you have for a curb? What condition is the curb in?

How much slope is there in the pan? If you put a straight edge across the length or width of the pan, how far down is the drain?

Tell about the drain itself. Can you unscrew it?

Multiple cracked or loose tiles on a shower floor is not good. It could be an indication of a significant problem.
Right now you're getting more questions than answers.
How old is the shower?
Do you know how it was built.

Pics would definitely help!

How are the tiles coming up? They are loose & I can pull them up by hand.

What type of sand is this? Fine, coarse? Fine

What is under the sand? A liner

What size is the shower pan? ~ 3'x4' What do you have for a curb? Tile w/ wood frame underneath What condition is the curb in? it's fine

How much slope is there in the pan? If you put a straight edge across the length or width of the pan, how far down is the drain? ~1/1/2"

Tell about the drain itself. Can you unscrew it?I don't think so.

Sounds like the deck mud is failing---possible saturated because the liner was not presloped---

I'm going to post a link that will show you what a hand packed base should look like.

Building a shower pan with pre-sloped mortar bed, liner and curb.

Compare this to yours and get back to us----I see a new pan job coming--

Thanks!

Based on where the broken tiles are (only the front third of the floor are), I'm going to try to replace just that area of the deck mud & tiles.

Give it a shot---but if the mud mix was bad---it will be bad everywhere--
