Replace broken tile

I had to break out a tile to fix a water leak in my shower. the wall has a cement backerboard behind the broken tile which was removed leaving a 6" square. (the copper pipe had a pinhole i think from freezing since it is in an outseide wall)

Can I fill the hole with 3/4" plywood and then put a new tile over it?

Thanks for any help
