Removing liquid nails from brick fireplace.

I have a used brick fireplace and the previous owner attached a rubber edge piece to the hearth (gray and very ugly). Several of the pieces have come off and left behind what appears to be liquid nails. Is there a way to remove the liquid nails from the bricks without harming the brick?

A utility knife, sharp chisel, steady hand w/ a lot of patience
Perhaps a caulk remover spray might help loosen it up...

Used bricks are soft. Scrape the caulk off the best you can and try scratch the brick as little as possible then take some sooty dirt and rub into the scratch areas and it will likely hide the scratch marks.

Paint remover will soften the old adhesive after you scrape off as much as you can---wash thoroughly --
