Paper faced see-through glass tile installation

Per manufacture - Use white modified thinset troweled on smoothly, butter the back of the tile. I've done this before and scraping out the grout lines is awful. I want to use the thinset as grout - any thoughts? Never used grout stain before - is it a viable option?
