Onyx vs. Tile Shower Base??

I am looking at options for my shower base. I am contemplating the options of Onyx vs. having my base tiled with traditional ceramic tile. What are the plus' and minuses of either? Ease of install, cost, maintainance etc?

Onyx vs. Tile Shower Base??

Well, lets see...
The advantages of a onyx or solid shower base is no grout lines to clean and seal.
The advantages of a fully tiled shower is resale, as it is considered an upgrade. Also it is totally customizable. It can be made to any shape or size.
Price comparing has too many variables. Price of product versus DIY or having a professional install etc.

Are you going to DIY?

Onyx vs. Tile Shower Base??

Due to getting a pretty good price from a contactor that I know, I am having someone install for me. Is there certain types of grout these days that have lower maintainance?

Onyx vs. Tile Shower Base??

The onyx bases look good an are a fraction of the cost of a tiled base.

As to stain free grouts---Latacrete makes an epoxy called Spectra Lock---Good stuff although unforgiving of mistakes---There is a Urathane grout which has received good reviews but I haven't used it yet.---Mike----

Onyx vs. Tile Shower Base??

Onyx bases don't require any grout.
If you have deep pockets they can also be designed to conform to any shape and size. (within reason)

This is yet another thread that wasn't here yesterday even tho it appears to have originated on 11-1 and did receive a single post yesterday.
