I just removed ceramic tile from my concrete floors. wow what a job. Now that all the tile is gone I've got a bigger mess. In the process of removing ceramic tile part of the concrete would come up with the old tile. I have holes in the concrete . The original floor tile was put down with wall mastic, yes i said wall mastic. Most of the mastic is still on the concrete floor and have found it impossible to remove without chipping more of the concrete out. My question do i need to remove the mastic before having porcelain tile installed or would it be easier to put plywood on top of the cement floor? I think that we would be money and labor ahead to put the plywood down instead of trying to remove old mastic and level the floor from the removal of the old tile . Please give me some advice .
Sounds like great stuff. Never have seen mastic that strong. I have done a number of retile jobs and find a rotary hammer with a wide chisel blade works well. You may still get some dings in the mud floor, but a thin coat of leveling compound will fix them or go heavy on the thinset if not too deep.
