natural stone grouting mess

We just had someone install some natural stone backsplash. We covered the large holes and indents with painters tape, and that worked well to prevent the grout from filling them in.

However, since the natural stone is not flat (you know, it has those indentations), the grout left behind a thin layer on the stones, enough to change the appearance of the stone from "sharp and crisp looking" to "dull and blendy looking" -- this in spite of several rounds of wet wiping and cleaning.

I heard there is a product that will remove grout, or at least make it so that you can clean it off. Anyone know of such a product?

Also, we might be ripping it out and redoing....any suggestions on how to prevent the grout from getting into those indents?

The natural stone is a rough, random piece kind with about 20-25 pieces to a 12 x 12 tile.

Thanks to anyone who can help.

Never tried it myself, but you might google "grout bag" or "grout gun".
