Laying tile on top of tile (Flooring)

Ed. B Newbie   Join Date: Nov 2011 Posts: 1	Laying tile on top of tile (Flooring) I want to know if I can lay ceramic tile on top of old thin, thin, think tile because the current tile has little to zero damage. Is this possible? ed

oh'mike Super Moderator   Join Date: Sep 2009 Location: Kane county,Illinois Posts: 16,335	Laying tile on top of tile (Flooring) Ceramic can be set over existing ceramic using unmodified thinset mixed with liquid latex--- Kerabond and Keralastic by Mepei is a good example. The existing ceramic must be perfect---Scuff the old tile with course sandpaper first--An angle grinder with 36 grit paper (two disks back to back) makes for a quick scuff. __________________ New members: Adding your location to your profile helps in many ways.--M--

Most ceramic tile does not have a exact thickness. This variation in thickness can cause big problems and crack your new tile

This is something you may notice by feel but if you try to attach a new tile onto it this could cause a tile to not have full contact to the surface underneath. Then the tiles may crack. This is why subfloor prep is so important in tiling.
