laying slate in the bathroom - HELP!

Hi - so, I'm in charge of finding out what we need to do to install slate in our bathroom, shower etc... knowing nothing about this I wondered if someone could talk me through it. We are renovating a house. One of the bathrooms will have an existing floor the other one (the main one with shower) will be new build so we can lay down what ever sub flooring we need.. just don't know what that is.

Not much time now, but I'd like to try to talk you out of installing slate in a shower. YIKES! that would not something I'd want to live with. Maintenance, mold, mildew, soap film, why do you think you want slate there?
