Laying Hardibacker

I'm tiling a room adjacent to my bathroom and using hardibacker. I know you are supposed to use thinset between the hardibacker and plywood, however, when they did the bathroom (I'm the second owner on the house) they did not do this. So, if I lay thinset first then my two floors will not be level...what should i do?

So they did it wrong and you want to follow there lead?
If it's where the two floors meet in a doorway you can just add a threshold.

Joecaption --- that's exactly why I posted, I'm NOT trying to do it wrong and follow their lead...

Adding a threshold would be a solution, but it is still going to leave some unevenness. It would be a bit difficult to find an appropriate and/or matching threshold between the two to bring the two rooms together...

And by the way, it's "their" not "there"...

Hi all,

And thanks for :

That goes on in many of the threads everyday, and makes me crazier........ Do you here me over their?:whistling2: Wasn't that learned in 5th - 6th grade?

I would not add a threshold when setting more tiles. What would be the purpose?

The difference with the thin set under the Hardie will make it about 1/16" higher at most. But, are you using the same tiles? If not it may not matter, probably won't matter anyway. Will you have a "seamless" continuation to the other room? You got pics?

Thanks, Jazman.

Could not find the same tiles, but using something very similar. The goal is to make a seamless continuation through the door way.

OK, so the tile might be a hair diff thickness anyway. How about the size? Are the tiles in the doorway full tiles lengthwise? If so I guess you won't be able to tape that Hardie seam.
