How to repair shower tile pulling away from wall?

I have a loose shower step tile that is pulling away. I am a total tile novice and would like some advice on how to repair. I have some tub and tile caulk that matches the grout. How do I repair affixing the tile back to the step prior? Should I use the shower while the tile is pulled away? I am afraid that water wuill get behind the tile and cause problems? Thanks for the advice.

Usually that type of damage is caused from water getting behind the tile.
Looks like you have a shower door with no curb, hard to tell from the photo.

You could just remove the tile, use liquid nails to glue it in place if it is just loose.

If you remove the tile and find water damage behind it, will need to remove all the damage, determine where the water is coming from and repair that, then rebuild what was removed.

if liquid nail is used, will that cause a problem to remove the tile down the road when I want to remove the tile? I have a frameless shower door. Thanks for the help.

The proper way would be to mix up some powder concrete mixture called thinset. There is also a glue in a tub you can purchase is made for tile. Having a brain fart and cant remember the products name, but is next to the thinset at the big box store.

It would not be cost effective and hard to set many tiles with liquid nails, but just to glue one tile back on is fine, you have some left over for other projects.

Go pull that tile and see what you find behind it, then go to the store and get what you need.

You prob have water behind the tile or a hole in the shower pan. Pull it out and see what you find. Use a hand grout saw to remove the grout around the tile to make it easier to remove unless it is already easy......more pics too

There's no probably about it, you have water damage due to improper waterproofing or it's lacking altogether. It may be repairable but you'll need to do some removing of tiles and backer.

Post pics when you begin the repair.

Water has gotten behind the tile, 99% of the time when tile looks like that. What other force would push tile out like that, other than expanding substrate? You have no simple tile repair job, sir.

Is this a seat in the shower. If yes. You could have a lot of water you don't know about. When you pop the top tile off and the underlayment. You could find the thing holding water. Those have to be really sealed up. With waterproofing membrane.

Breaking up. Sentences. Is confusing. I think so.

OP said it was a step. Not sure how you could be viewing this so it looks like a step.

No it's not a seat, it's a shower curb, notice the shower door.

I can picture how it was built. 2x4's with membrane over it, then the genius screwed the backer on the membrane and now you've got swollen wood and waterproofing with holes. Start ripping it all out.

Those sentences are more annoying than ALL CAPS.

Maybe the backer was fiberglass drywall, ha ha, the new screwup that is sweeping the nation.

How to repair shower tile pulling away from wall?

I have removed the tile. To my novice eye, there doesn't appear to be any water damage. What do you all think? Yes, it is a shower curb. I showed the back of the tile because I wasn't sure how much of the old mortar needed to be removed to assure a good contact. It look all right?

Can this mortar be used on a shower curb? Anyone used it? OK for a shower?

You have enough removed from the tile. It looks like they did a horrible job to begin with. What material is behind the tile? Looks like grey pan liner??
