How to repair grout on shower tiles?

My bathroom was remodelled 10 years ago. I noticed ants coming in through cracks in the grout at the ceiling and some other places. I still have the original grout product and the sealer. I would like a blow by blow instruction as to how to repair these cracks so the ants won't be able to sneak in. I live in earthquake So. California.

Obviously you need to address the ant issue. They are being attracted to moisture if coming into the bathroom I suspect. Hopefully you do not have water seeping behind your walls.

Assuming the tiles are intact and still nicely stuck to the tileboard...

You can get a roto tool with a grout bit to carve/route out the old grout or a grinder with a flat blade. Make sure you wear eye protection and a dust mask. The tool gets plugged into a GCFI outlet please since you are around water.

Clean all the grout debris and dust thoroughly.

When the grout has set and cured, apply the sealer per instructions.

If the existing grout is 10 years old, be prepared for the new grout to be slightly different in color. If it was sealed properly, the color difference should not be too bad.

If everything is intact it is not a particularly difficult job. It is a messy one though.

Do not use the ancient grout---it is junk after 10 years--Buy some new stuff.

If ants are in the house behind the tile---you have a bigger problem than cracked grout---

Absolutely, you have an ant problem not a grout problem.

I'm betting you've got a water leak. Grout does not just crack all by its lonesome in the field of a wall/ceiling or floor. Water has saturated the lumber, it's expanded and it's falling apart.

Tile or no tile, grout or no grout, wet or dry, there should be no ants in your house.
