How to prepare the wall for tiling backsplash?

I'm going to tiling the backsplash for my kitchen. My question is how to prepare the wall surface? This is a kitchen reno project, the new cabinets and countertop are already on, and there is paint on the wall where the backsplash is going to be on. Shall I sand the paint off? Or I can simply put the thinset mortar directly on it?

BTW, my backsplash is marble stripes with mesh on the back.

Any info and help will be greatly appreciated!

Clean the wall to get any grease off and tile right over the sheetrock with out removing any paint. Use thin set out of a bag, not the premixed kind.

How to prepare the wall for tiling backsplash?

Thank you very much!

One thing I forgot to mention. The upper part of the wall where the vent hood goes to is unpainted. There was a cabinet, but not I'm going to tiling it and install a chimney vent hood. I don't need do anything to this part of the wall either?

Thanks.
