honed Slate for entrance way good or bad?

ok a few years i bought honed slate tile for my side entrance. I haven't installed it yet but I'm thinking now that I might have made a mistake with going slate for and entrance way. The landing is only 4x4. Here is the thing I live in Canada and we have snow in the winter and salt from the roads and sidewalks that will be on our shoes when we enter. Should I not install the slate because of this?

What should I consider for an entrance way?

Don't worry about the installation and what type of wood I have and all that jazz. I'll have it up to grade for the slate...its the application it is being used for that I;m worried about.

polk's right - ' IF its seal'd right ! ' that's the issue as it'll NEVER be seal'd ' right ' to the extent that you'll have water intrusion, freezing temps, ice forming under the slate, & eventual loosening of slate.

I have slate at my back entrance way and have no issues. Sealed of course. I am in the Rockies of BC. We get a bit more snow than TO.

Slate is a rock. Why would rock be a problem in this application? The substrate should maybe be waterproofed first. Seal the slate before installation then again after it is grouted. Use a stone sealer suitable for exterior use. Expect a cheap slate to shed wafers over time.

Yep its an interior application but we use this entrance way all the time. So I'll waterproof the Ply before install...I was actually going to cement board under there too just for more support and because of exposure to water from going in and out.

Thanks.
