Does Tile Size Make A Room Look Bigger or Smaller?

Your opinions, please...

Does bigger tile (16x16 for instance) make a relatively small room look bigger, or the other way around? I've got a family member who insists that huge tiles in a tiny bathroom will make the bathroom look bigger.

Tile size doesn't have much affect on the perceived size of the room especially if the grout is white or near the color of the tile. On the other hand, darker tile colors/hues will definitely make the room appear smaller.

Choose tile size wisely. Larger tiles (16x16) can be more difficult to set evenly with the adjacent tiles especially if the floor or walls are not dead flat. Also, large tile (16x16) in a small bathroom will require cuts on as much as 75% of the tiles whereas smaller tiles (6x6) will require cuts on about 35%.

Wouldn't 6x6 tiles look better in a smaller room?

Some people view things based on the relative size of the surface occupier - others don't.

I don't think it matters - what's most important is the design and layout. I remember being in a small gas station bathroom and they had 2" tiles on the walls in a diagonal pattern and it was dizzying and made the room feel weird. But that as a back splash or accent in a larger room wouldn't be a problem.

I agree with Snav. The beauty (or not) is greatly affected by the layout and joint work. Features that make a tile installation look good include the following:

LAYOUT
1. It would not be unusual to spend more time planning the layout and prepping the surfaces than actually setting the tile.
2. Rooms and walls are rarely square - establish a tile joint line for the whole room that balances one unparallel side with the other. Get a tile installation book, it will explain this with graphics.
3. Centering the tile (or tile joint) on major plumbing fixtures or outlets.
4. Balancing cuts - don't start with a whole tile unless you end the opposite side with a whole tile (take into account #2).
5. In your planning lay out the entire room, not just one area.

JOINTS
6. Evenly spaced joints (use plastic joint spacers)
7. Intersecting joints that align (use plastic intersecting joint spacers)
8. Make sure the tile surfaces are even from one tile to the next (no toe stumpers)
9. Tile with rolled edges will display a varying grouted joint width if the grout is not removed down to where the rolled edge meets the square edge. When sponging, wipe all grouted joints to the same depth.

OTHER
Don't skimp on grout or mortar quality. The higher quality grouts and mortars are well worth the cost. If you don't have heavy duty mixing equipment, buy premixed mortar.

Every bathroom I've done has gotten 12" tile. I think smaller tile Looks cheap. I'd put 18" tile in a small bathroom without hesitation. I don't think it makes the room feel bigger or smaller. Color plays more of a factor in that.

Large tile in small rooms

The "trend" is towards larger tiles. And yes, larger tile in small rooms tend to make the rooms look larger. Also, you'll have less grout to keep clean.

Shoot - less grout and tiling to do overall. My 5x6 bathroom with 4" tile was a nightmare.

We went from 12" tiles to 17" tiles throughout our house. What a difference. The house seems to be much more spacious now.

May be just me but setting large tiles at an angle to the room, when it doesn't look goofy, makes it look larger.
