do i have to remove old adhesive glue on wall for new ceramic with glue?

so i removed all the old tile on my parents bathroom wall and it is chiprock with adhesive glue left. I want to lay new ceramic on teh wall but my question is should I scrape off all the old glue when i put the the new glue on or is it ok to just put new glue on top of that old glue and lay my tile?

Also when I removed the old tile the layer off gypsum came off in some small sections and there is cement...will the glue stick to this or should I just use mortar (the white stuff for stone)it's like glue anyway.I have some of this left over from a previous job so don't have to buy it.

the tile I'm laying is ceramic 9x12's.

Ideally, you should have removed the old drywall and tile, which gives you a new smooth surface for the new. But chip off high spots, then skim coat with drywall compound, sand lightly. That will give you a smooth surface.

I assume you are not talking about shower walls, only walls outside the tub/shower??? Never tile over drywall, especially old drywall, in a shower/tub.

no its not a shower wall...there isn't even a shower in the bathroom..its an on-suite, jut toilet and vanity.

Thanks.
