Mike,

I don't know of a mat heating system that will work under carpet, it has to be a hard floor covering.

Carpet helps a little bit, but you need something more on a cold winter's evening. Carpet padding doesn't list an R factor. We sell a carpet cushion that is so dense that it has a 4.5 R factor. It is mainly used on basement floors, but is great on any grade. Here are some other features:

  • [*]100% Recyclable
    [*]100% Waterproof
    [*]No Chlorofluocarbons (CFC's)
[*]4.5 R factor for premium insulation
    [*]100% Non Alergenic
    [*]3/8" thick (54 W x 60'L)
    [*]0.25 FSI-Class A fire rated
    [*]15 lb. Density Feel
  • can be shipped to lower 48.

I don't see why one of the typical floor heating systems used for tile installations and buried in a cement mass wouldn't help some. I wouldn't expect any outstanding efficiency but I'm not sure that's a requirement in this case. Anytime you can raise the temperature of the substrate I would think you would also raise the temperature of the floor covering. I'll bet it would work just fine.:) Insulating the underside of the floor structure would also improve the ability of the heated mass to contain heat and of course heat rises and that's a plus also.:)
