Hello all...big delemma here...i have a family room that is build over my garage and the floor is a concrete slab..the walls and ceiling are insulated well and there are two heat vents that were added as an extention from the house furnace..however..the floor is cold..there is padding and thin carpet there now, but the floor is still cold....
do i get better thicker carpet and padding? Do i get radiant floor heat for under the carpet? do i insulate under neath...please help..
I like radiant heat mats under ceramic tile.
We put it throughout our downstairs and the electric bill only increased about 20 cents a day.
Plus, tile has solar benefits.
I don't know of a mat heating system that will work under carpet, it has to be a hard floor covering.
Carpet helps a little bit, but you need something more on a cold winter's evening. Carpet padding doesn't list an R factor. We sell a carpet cushion that is so dense that it has a 4.5 R factor. It is mainly used on basement floors, but is great on any grade. Here are some other features:
[*]100% Recyclable
[*]100% Waterproof
[*]No Chlorofluocarbons (CFC's)
[*]4.5 R factor for premium insulation
[*]100% Non Alergenic
[*]3/8" thick (54 W x 60'L)
[*]0.25 FSI-Class A fire rated
[*]15 lb. Density Feel
I don't see why one of the typical floor heating systems used for tile installations and buried in a cement mass wouldn't help some. I wouldn't expect any outstanding efficiency but I'm not sure that's a requirement in this case. Anytime you can raise the temperature of the substrate I would think you would also raise the temperature of the floor covering. I'll bet it would work just fine. Insulating the underside of the floor structure would also improve the ability of the heated mass to contain heat and of course heat rises and that's a plus also.
Lay pressure treat 2x4 flat across concrete 16 on center and use 1 inch p2000 foam insulation in between. Make sure the insulation fits tight. Then lay advantech subflooring on top.
