Best (easiest) way to remove old tile from floor

Hey folks -

I'm about to retile one of my bathrooms. The bathroom floor has the same tiles as another bathroom that I redid a year ago. The specifics: the tiles are 4" hexagons, 1/16 grout line, plywood subfloor, they've been there for about 15 years. When I was taking them out of the other bathroom a year ago, it was crazy hard. I would shatter a few tiles with a hammer and use a Wonder Bar and mallet to get underneath the tiles and pop them off of the floor. This took FOREVER! I also cut myself up from flying porcelain fragments and hit my thumb about a dozen times with the mallet. Does anybody have any suggestions on speeding up the process?:confused1:

I use one of these with a wide chisle.

Laying directly over plywood is not the best way. At least 1/4 tile board with thin set under it is suggested.

Get your wife to do it for you.

Thanks - I'll have to see if it's in the budget. When I buy tools, I always tell my wife that they are an "investment".

I use hardi-backer under my new tiling projects. Works great. I guess it wasn't the standard when they built this house. We bought it about 5 years ago and I'm slowly updating.

if a bosch bulldog isn't in the budget go rent one for a day.
