bathroom tile marks

my white bathroom tile, in the back of the shower has developed black smear (looks like grease) on several of the lower (to to the bottom) tiles. This will not come off, not even a little. seems permanent.

Does this sound familiar

bathroom tile marks

Is this on the tile itself, or on the grout or caulking?
The first thing that comes to mind is mold, but a pic would help.
