The 411 on slate

I've had people tell me that slate is not a good choice for bathrooms and entry ways, I've recently purchased a home and our plan is to make it rustic, we love the slate flooring and would like to put it in our entry and bathroom, and possibly the kitchen. My concerns are the flaking if we were to install it in our entry which may see some water due to the fact we live in Idaho snow country, would I have major problems with slate? I've tried to find something comparable in procelain and ceramic but havent been able to find any with as rich a texture and color, any help would be appreciated.
