Where does the redguard go ?

Red Guard is usually the final item ---there are many ways to build a pan---
How to build a shower - Building a shower pan with pre-sloped mortar bed, liner and curb.

This link shows the traditional pan with liner---this type of pan is not coated with Redguard----with this one only the walls are coated--usually red guard up to 6 foot minimum------tape all seams with tile mesh---then coat with a very thin layer of thinset---after that, the Red Guard is applied to the walls----two or three coats.

If you are going to build a pan without a liner----a special drain set will be needed--Schluter and Latacrete make them----those drains have a waterproof membrane attached---then the pan is painted with the surface membrane---

For that type of pan I use Hydroban (by Latacrete)--that is a heavy membrane--I do not know if Red guard is approved for waterproofing a pan----
