What tile layout do you like best? Pics included

Just started tiling my surround and I have two very similar layouts graphed up. The actual colors of the tile and listello will be different than the ones shown in the pictures, so don't look at the computerized colors since they aren't accurate. The layout however, is pretty darn close to what I am planning on doing.

My only question is what do you think looks better, a tiled surround with a clean "side cap" (i don't know if that's what it's called) or a tiled surround where the tile is layed out all the way to the sides? Notice the one difference in the two pictures?

I'm extremely indecisive when it comes to remodeling/design, not to mention I don't have the best taste. So help me decide between the two please

The best thing about tile is the flexabilty of design, you can do it any way you like. So it is your choice. If the rest of the room has no tile, I would go with a border, to delineate tile from non-tile area.

I like the caps----Never was a fan of the metal tile edging needed to hide the cut edges.

If the first pic uses bullnose tile, I would go with that one. It looks more finished to me.

Awesome, thanks! Looks like the "side caps" generally win. Although I am doing this on a very small budget, so I won't be using bullnosed edges since they are relatively expensive. But I may bevel the edges with my wet saw. Beveled edges won't look great on porcelain, but they may look better than no modification at all. Anyways, thanks for the replies, now I know for future reference too if I have more cash, I'll use bullnosed borders

Budget ---use a metal edging---don't leave a cut edge--beveled or not---you will hate it.

Schluter had a lot of profiles and colors---look at their web site for ideas.---Mike---

Okay, thanks, I will definitely look into finishing off the edges with something proper instead of doing the beveled edges. If the Schluter edging is cheaper than the bullnosed tiles, I'll purchase them for sure. I went on their website and they don't list prices for their products. I'll have to contact them tomorrow. Anyone know roughly how much they cost? I need about 16 ft of tile edging/transition.

Do they generally sell comparable tile edging/trim materials at chain hardware stores (lowes, home depot)?

I think my local hardware store carried edging, but if I remember correctly they sold it in 6 inch lengths and it was $4 per 6 inches, or $8 a foot. That's kind of out of my budget right now.

oh' mike, you're the man! I had no idea they had it, and cheaper than the local tile store I was going to get it from. Wow, only $6 to $15 per 8 ft (depending on the style you want), that is great! Thanks everyone
