Question

Updating Kitchen on low budget

Hello! this is my first post ..

We are wanting to update our kitchen. Our house is about 20 yrs old and in need of a little TLC in some areas. We have a limited budget so we have decided to paint our cabinets. We will also paint the walls & replace the countertops. At the moment we will stick with the current flooring & appliances.

The reason I'm posting is to get a little "input" on the colors .. our appliances are white .. the flooring is tan in color. Our current cabinets are dark wood as well as the trim all over the house. We have talked about (and had several friends suggest) painting them white. If we do that then the trim all over the house will eventually have to be painted. My concern is that there will be too much white in the kitchen with the appliances also white. The kitchen is not very big .. its rectangle shape. There is a breakfast nook so there is plenty of lighting. There is also an opening window looking into the living room.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what color would be best on the cabinets?? Once I figure that out, then we will pick the countertop & wall colors. I know painting is an inexpensive fix, however, it seems to be a time consuming task. I want to make sure we make the right color choice for the cabinets so we are not disappointed with the finished product

Thank you in advance for any input

I don't have a right answer for you but here is what I just did for color reference. The before pic is after we repainted the cabinets and put new counter tops in and replaced the appliances 6 years ago.

The nice thing about painted cabinets is that they can be just about anything. Friends did their cabinets in an old Victorian in a nice eggplant color with some new door pulls and it looks great.

I don't think you should lock yourself in the mindset that you will have to paint all the trim in the house white if you do the kitchen cabinets. And white is tricky and not the best choice for a kitchen in my opinion.

I would pick a kitchen that looks like yours or upload an actual picture into one of the free virtual painting programs offered by the major paint companies. Mask off the areas in yours to be painted and explore color options and combinations. I use the visualizer from Benjamin Moore but I know Sherwin Williams has a good one too.

Inventory the colors you have and are sticking with first thing---appliances, floors and so forth from what you posted. Everybody wants stone, glass, concrete or whatever countertops these days but if Corian or even Formica is what fits the budget you can pull off a really nice kitchen ordering just which finish you want never having to apologize for it.

Don't reinvent wheels. Look in magazines for kitchen color schemes that work for you. Grab fabric swatches that have pleasant color schemes going on. I found just the exterior color scheme a client wanted scanning in a necktie and grabbing the color pixels.

And do spend some time shopping for new and updated hardware. You may want to reposition it but it can really make the difference in an updated kitchen.

Keep this temporary kitchen update in context. Plan on a complete renovation 5 or whatever years down the road but do as nice an update as you can for what you have to spend now. Don't compromise for shlock. Buy good paint store paint, for example.
