Uneven grout color

We had the tile replaced in our shower. Everything was removed (tile, wallboard, etc.), and new tile was installed. Some small areas of the grout are darker than others. About 90 percent of the grout is the desired beige color. A number of small sections are a brown color, as if the grout didn't dry. The contractor used polyblend sanded grout. The darker coloring is especially bad in the corners of the two niches for holding soap and shampoo bottles. The grout was applied October 12, and has not been touched since then. See the attached pictures.

What caused the problem?
How can we get rid of the dark sections of grout?
In the future, how can this coloring problem be prevented?

Uneven grout color

Was this a premixed colored grout(color already in)?? How well was it mixed, by hand or with a drill?? It may just not be completly cured, but that is a stretch. Has the shower been used???

Uneven grout color

Yes, it was a premixed color grout, with only water added.
I don't know if the contractor used a drill to mix it.
The shower has not been used.

Uneven grout color

Assuming the contractor won't re-grout the shower, one option would be to buy a grout stain to match the lighter color. You can simply paint over the grout with the grout stain to change the color. I have done this before to light grout on the floor that became dark from dirt and wear. The problem with this though, is that if you aren't able to match the lighter grout color very closely, you may have to paint over all the grout to achieve an even color which is rather time consuming.

We heard that lightly scrubbing the grout with a mixture of 1 part white vinegar to 3 parts water might remove the dark spots of grout. Have you heard of this approach? We plan to try it, if it won't damage the grout. If the vinegar doesn't work, we will use the grout stain. Best case scenario is that the grout stain matches the lighter color of grout, and that would not take much time. Worst case scenario is that we have to paint all the grout, and I agree that it would be a pain in the neck. But since this is a one time thing, it is worth the effort to get it done properly. Thanx for the advice. Much appreciated!
