An unasked question is the only dumb question

Okay, I feel this is a dumb question and I searched through stuff but kept finding other things to read along the way. I'm 99% certain this can't be done, but can you tile over an existing fiberglass standup shower? The fact I've never seen it leads me to think no, but I gotta ask before I decide to tear it out just in case.

I'd say the tile cement would not stick
I'd think you could put backerboard over the fiberglass
But I prefer to rip down to studs & look for water damage

2 bathrooms so far & both had damage
