Tub Tile Surround Question

1/4" X 3/8" X 1/4" will work for both if your thinset consistency is appropriate.

Spread some thinset, set some tile, then remove a few to verify your coverage. That size tile will require you to spread and comb your substrate and then also skim-coat the back of each tile.
