Am in the process of finishing a remodel of my bathroom. I redid the shower area and am now getting ready to do the tub area. The tub has a cultured marble type backsplash that I am taking down and am going to tile. There is step up to get into the tub. The tread is going to be replaced but the riser is a fake marble piece that I believe is plastic. My question is can I tile right over this. It is smooth, can I scuff it up with like sandpaper and then thinnest the porcelain tile to it? Any help would be greatly appreciated .
I would not do that----Steps are a weak item in the tile world--slick surface of the old covering might not bond well---best to remove that and add 1/4" Durrock, after you make sure that the structure is solid,
