Taping drywall behind cabinets?

Can anyone give me a reason why I should tape the drywall behind my kitchen cabinets? The areas that won't be covered by the cabinets will have a granite backsplash.

Cold air can enter if not sealed

If the air can flow, so can the FIRE.

Would it make a difference with all the junction boxes and other wall penetrations?

No more than not putting up railings along a second story balcony makes sense simply because you COULD fall down the stairs since there is no railing at the top of them anyway.

You do what you can, where you can, because anything you do to reduce any sort of safety risk might mean not having to waste money on a family member's funeral. Nothing we do will eliminate every danger. But it's far better than one day lamenting the fact that you didn't.

I’ll give you a mulligan though.

The thing is, if anything you do slows the progression of a fire even a minute or two... it's a minute longer to wake up, gather your wits, and get out of the house... or a minute longer the fire department has to save a little more of your possessions.

And like Ron said, just get it fairly smooth. Doesn't matter what it looks like, as long as it blocks air movement.
