shower pan/base question

So I plan on retiling my shower. The existing tile is in fair shape, just dated and the grout's fairly stained. The existing fiberglass flooring is fine too. Is it possible/recommended/not recommended to demo the tile, and leave the pan alone? Based on my research of this project, the pan is where most of the room for error exists. Thanks.
