when installing a drain in new shower floor using backer boards do you set the first part of drain in hardi board or directly to wood subfloor? i have the three part drain.

Welcome diyourself1, to the best dary DIY'r site on the web.

You may want to rethink, research the materials used for the floor/base of you shower project. Hardi-board is not really recommended as far as I know for use as shower pan material.

Second question is ...... have you installed a proper liner?

you are clearly very lost, but thats ok, u came to the right place. Its a good idea to fully understand the procedure before you start, rather than finding out later you have to redo it all.

please read this:

or this:

if you're going to do a custom tiled shower pan, those are the two ways you should consider. Forget about the preformed ready-to-tile shower bases.

Now you know you are headed in the wrong direction. DON'T do what you are thinking, it won't work.

acerunner left out the simplest shower floor system of them all. Take a look at the "Schluter System's Shower Kits."

We are here to help you through any of them you choose.
