safety of big piece granite slab around bathtub

I am very interested in installing three big pieces granite slabs around bath tub. However these big pieces are very heavy, so I worry about the safety issue. Could they collapse and kill my kid?

I know I am a little bit paranoid.

I will put water barrier and 1/2" cement board on studs. Then slab on top of cement board. Is thin set strong enough to provide enough strength?

I've seen this done with a solid surface material in a hotel, something like Corian. I believe it was screwed on with the screws sealed.
