Retile shower

We want to retile our enclosed shower. There are no leaks, this is just a cosmetic change. Currently there are 1x1 inch tiles on the floor and 4x4 tiles on the walls and ceilings. We want to replace with 8x8 and 4x4 tile in a pattern.

How do we remove the existing tile with a minimum of prep before installing the new tile?

There is no such thing...

Take it down to the studs and start over.

Unless you possess a magic wand, it's a gut job.
